Black Eagle visits again. There are a few hens on the property who refuse to nest or sleep in the hen house. Henny Penny is one of these hens, she refuses to sleep or mix with any of the other chickens on the property. She sleeps in the stable, no matter how many times I grumble and carry her down to the hen house, when next I look, she's back in the stable.I have now given up with Henny Penny. This story does not involve Henny Penny (lucky her). This is a story about a hen who has the same attitude towards the hen house as Henny Penny does. She decided to make her nest in the little stone house next to the pond. When I wake up in the morning, I open the curtains and I look out over the pond and over the sea (this is all part of my waking up). While I was still coming to grips with my day, I noticed that this hen was off her nest and pecking around for food. I was about to get up to feed her when the black eagle landed. Aware of the danger, she ran back into the stone house, which I thought was quite a sensible thing to do. When I saw the Black Eagle walk towards the stone house, I knew I had to run. Despite my rushing, by the time I got to the pond, he had already dragged her out of the stone house, and within a few metres of me, he took off with her in his claws. I was stunned. I always believed that eagles would dive down from the sky to catch their prey. The only explanation I have for this kind of behaviour, is that the eagle must have been very hungry and desperate for a meal. |
