The Red Hens - January 2007 If you love fresh farm eggs, then coming to stay at Enchanted Garden is a must. A few months ago I went to our local pet store and bought 8 fluffy little chicks, 1 day old. When Natasha and Nicole came home from school it was love at first sight. They carried, kissed and cuddled these little chicks whenever they got the chance. And of course these chicks were given names, Pom Pom, Emerald, Drumsticks, Diana, Rosie, Corne, Twakkie and Matilda. I looked at them daily as they were growing up, and I was just a little concerned what I would do if they were all roosters. Fortunately as time went by, I was blessed with 8 beautiful hens. And of course these hens do not believe that they belong to the bird species; they think that they are human. When the front door opens, they all sprint to see who could get into the house first. The other day I found Pom Pom fast asleep on the couch in the lounge. When you try and chase them out of the house, they look at you as if you are the one with a serious problem. They will only leave if you call them, preferably with a little snack in your hand or even better, if you pick them up and hold them in your arms and gently put them down outside. When the children play outside or when I do some gardening, they are there, just happy to be in our company. The other day, the children were swinging on the swing chair with two of the hens, singing them songs. The hens just loved it. It was not long before we found our guests swinging on the swing chair with Emerald fast asleep in their arms. |
