Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is situated about 48 km from Cape Town.In 1679 Simon van der Stel explored the fertile valley beyond the Liesbeek River. The land was surveyed, farms allocated to burgers, and so in this land through which the Eerste River flows grew Stellenbosch, the second European settlement in South Africa. It has many historic monuments and treasures like the house, "La Gratitude" built in 1798. The Braak, a historic town square set aside as a parade ground in 1703, The Old Arsenal built in 1777 and the Anglican Church with its roof of thatch and its stained glass windows built in 1852. Dorp Street has the longest row of historic buildings in South Africa. Stellenbosch is also a university town and contains many fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. It is also home to the Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery founded in 1925 by an American doctor. This town's strong link with the past is conveyed in the names of farms in the surrounding district and streets in the town. The Stellenbosch Wine Route, the first such route to be established in South Africa, was officially opened in April 1971.
